Charlie (AKA Mr.TeenyPants) turned 3 months old on 11/22! I’m not sure of his length since he didn’t have an official checkup this month, but we did visit the doctor twice for what thankfully turned out to be nothing (both times), so I know that his weight is currently 14 pounds, 11 ounces. My chunky boy!
In his third month of life, he began rewarding us with gigantic social smiles.
He has also become incredibly vocal and will sometimes hold “conversations” with us. Just tonight he began sticking his tongue out at us if my husband or I stuck our tongue out first! He is gaining increasing control of his hands and spends most of the day attempting to shove both fists into his mouth at once. Once of these days, he’s going to succeed. He has also become a little drool-monster, and I spend a lot of time trying to convince myself that it has nothing to do with pre-teething. NO TEETH.
We haven’t gotten a proper laugh out of him yet, but he seems to want to. We tickle him and make ridiculous faces and we’ll get big smiles and sometimes a gurgly coo that certainly sounds like the precursor to a laugh- as if he knows that this is where a laugh goes, but hasn’t quite gotten the mechanics of it figured out yet.
Month 3 was also a month of some sad milestones- my little bug got his first cold, complete with congested nose (and screaming BLOODY MURDER when we tried to relieve his congestion with saline drops and the nasal aspirator), little cough, and pitifully hoarse voice. Fortunately he is feeling better today. He has also developed his first diaper rash (in addition to some bumpy dry skin on his elbows and thighs), which breaks my heart. I’m still trying to figure out the best treatment for it- I’m working with a combination of nakeybutt time to let his poor hiney breathe, as well as applying breastmilk, coconut oil, Aquaphor, arrowroot powder (as a baby powder), and occasionally some Butt Paste. Not all at once, obviously.
Charlie is getting stronger and stronger by the day. He can now lift his head up very high during tummy time, and lasts much longer before he gets upset and starts screaming. No rolling over yet, but I have a feeling it’s just around the corner! He is one strong dude! He loves to sit up (with lots of help) in our laps, and if you hold his hands and get his feet positioned right he also loves to push himself up to standing!
It was also during month 3 that Charles began to (technically) sleep through the night. Technically sleeping through the night for an infant is 5 hours, and that’s typically the maximum that he’ll sleep in his first chunk of the evening. I can usually count on at least 4 hours to begin with, which after about 2.5 months of waking up every 2 hours like clockwork, is GLORIOUS. His sleep isn’t consistent yet and we still have quite a few difficult nights, but we’re getting by with lots of coffee. Or maybe that last part is just me.
I am so excited to celebrate Charlie’s first holiday season, starting with Thanksgiving in just two days! We’re hosting some friends in our home, and then we’ll be traveling down to visit family a few weeks after that for his FIRST CHRISTMAS. Expect very many pictures. :)
